Bank of England: Keep a woman on English banknotes

ecriturefeminin:

This week Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England, announced that Winston Churchill will replace social reformer Elizabeth Fry as the face of £5 notes. This means that, other than the Queen, there will be no women featured on our English banknotes.

An all-male line-up on our banknotes sends out the damaging message that no woman has done anything important enough to appear. Women are poorly under-represented in so many aspects of our daily lives - currency being one of them. If you think it is important that there should remain a woman on the notes who is being recognised for her achievements then please sign this petition.

World’s Most Beautiful Abandoned Places

Italian product manager and web designer Francesco Mugnai recently added a collection of images to his blog touting some of the most beautiful images of abandoned spots and modern ruins that he’d ever seen. The images Mugnai has captured come from empty castles, shuttered power plants, and dilapidated churches around the world. From a sunken yacht in Antarctica to a forever-closed amusement park in Japan, these images all make up a sort of anti-phoenix; rather than rising as new from the ashes, these husks remain preserved in decomposition, forcing viewers to confront the strange beauty of ruination.

Infrared Landscapes by Richard Mosse

Taken in the Eastern Congo, Richard’s candy-coated landscapes were created through a combination of an obsolete wooden field camera and a rare technique produced by Kodak Aerochrome, a product developed for military use in the detection of aerial bombing targets, but used stunningly here, drawing out the dark crimsons and blood-red corals of the hidden spectrum within. These pieces are currently showing at The Armory Show through March 10th, 2013.

How hard is it to be a female human being in the media? Anne Hathaway is a pretty good measure. She learned everything she could about sex trafficking and prostitution to play Fantine, and knew only too well that modern-day Fantines were probably living within blocks of the Academy Awards. As she said in her acceptance speech, ‘Here’s hoping that someday in the not too distant future the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories and never in real life.’

Did that get coverage? No. Instead, the huge and expensive media beast speculated on her nipples. In a way, that makes Anne’s point. No wonder there are still Fantines, so many in the media think like pimps, traffickers and johns.
